MTN Faces Protest Over High Data Charges

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore on Wednesday led a protest in Abuja against MTN Nigeria over complaints of poor service and high data costs. The demonstrators, gathered at the company’s Maitama office under the “Occupy MTN” campaign, accused telecom providers of unfair practices such as rapid data depletion and unreliable network quality. Sowore said Nigerians are paying heavily for internet services that do not last as expected, stressing that data plans should deliver full value. He added that the protest marks the start of a wider movement demanding affordable and more reliable internet access. Other speakers at the protest also criticised major telecom operators, including Globacom, Airtel Nigeria, and 9mobile, while faulting the Nigerian Communications Commission for not doing enough to protect consumers. Protesters warned that the action could spread nationwide if service quality does not improve, calling on the government to enforce stricter regulation and ensure fair pricing for subscribers.
