NAFDAC arraigns trader over alleged fake alcohol production

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has arraigned a Lagos-based trader, Chidera Chukwuka, before a Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged production and sale of fake alcoholic drinks. The 30-year-old was brought before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa on a six-count charge involving unlawful possession, manufacture, distribution, and sale of unwholesome alcoholic products. The agency accused him of producing counterfeit drinks branded as Johnnie Walker Red Label, Flirt Vodka, Lords Gin London Dry, and Gordon’s Dry Gin. During the court session, the prosecutor, Isa Ali, asked that the charges be read, and the defendant pleaded not guilty to all counts. Following his plea, the prosecution requested a trial date and asked the court to remand him pending trial. As the defendant had no legal representation and did not oppose the request, the court ordered that he be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service. The case was adjourned to June 1, 2026, for trial. NAFDAC alleged that the suspect was found on April 14, 2026, at Apongbon, Lagos Island, with fake alcoholic products which were packaged in a misleading way to appear genuine. The agency also stated that the products were unregistered and distributed within Lagos State. According to the charges, the offences violate provisions of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act and other related laws, and may attract penalties if proven in court.
