Borno Says Quran Oath Stops Repentant Terrorists From Returning to Crime

The Borno State Government has defended its rehabilitation and reintegration programme for former terrorists, saying participants swear an oath with the Quran before returning to society. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, said the oath is a major part of the deradicalisation process and is meant to discourage them from returning to terrorism. She explained that anyone who breaks the oath after surrendering faces serious consequences, adding that the programme also includes rehabilitation and education. However, the government admitted that funding remains a major challenge in caring for and supporting the rehabilitated individuals.
